LONG READ
DEEP DIVE
The Undercliff project in Cheltenham involves the ambitious remodelling and complete refurbishment of a two-storey detached dwelling on the edge of the picturesque Cotswolds. Initially designed by a longstanding client associate, the plans lacked architectural flair and featured elevations and material choices that the client found uninspiring. They sought a more refined and impactful design—a modern Mediterranean coastal house that could also blend seamlessly with its Cotswold setting.
BTA was brought on board to address these challenges. To avoid a typical “yellow Cotswold twee” appearance, Mediterranean-inspired design elements such as natural timber, cropped Portland stone, and a light, sun-bleached aesthetic were introduced and created a mixed material palette, including locally sourced stone, balanced the modern with the rustic, creating a visually appealing yet contextually appropriate home.
To create a more playful elevation reminiscent of Spanish or Greek coastal homes, window openings were repositioned to frame the hillside views better, and a frameless glass projecting window was added for year-round enjoyment.
Environmental considerations include using sustainable and regionally available materials to align the design with eco-friendly principles. As BTA engages with local planners, this approach and the client’s positive reception of the design will deliver an elegant, modern home that respects its countryside setting.
Key strategies reduced the structure’s perceived visual mass, including creating a timber “box” set atop a stone-clad plinth, separated by a shadow gap detail to give the upper level the appearance of floating.
The project is currently at RIBA Stage 2 (Concept Design), with photorealistic renders in progress. Budgeted at £400–500k, the builder-client plans to execute the work using sustainable methods such as timber framing or SIP panels. This will ensure the redesign harmonises with its surroundings and achieves a striking yet contextually sensitive aesthetic.
