LONG READ

DEEP DIVE

The Menlove Avenue project involved refurbishing an existing home extension to create an open-plan living area that maximised space and natural light. The client sought to reconfigure the interior to improve flow and relocate utility areas while addressing concerns about light access and privacy.

Early designs proposed incorporating skylights and reorganising the interior layout to enhance the sense of openness. The design team carefully addressed neighbour privacy concerns regarding skylights by proposing obscure glazing. After further consultation, the client agreed to these changes, ensuring compliance while maintaining the design’s aesthetic integrity.

The project progressed through RIBA Stage 2 (Concept Design), with plans submitted to the council for permitted development confirmation.

This project underscores the collaborative nature of architectural work. It balances professional advice with client priorities to achieve functional and appealing results. Though relatively straightforward, the Menlove Avenue extension highlights the value of persistence in resolving design conflicts and ensuring client satisfaction.
