LONG READ
DEEP DIVE
The Poplar Bank project in Knutsford involved converting a garage into a practical living space for a growing family. The aim was to create a bedroom with an ensuite bathroom and utility area while maintaining the property’s existing aesthetic. This project prioritised functional living within a limited footprint, ensuring every element added value to the property.
RIBA Stages 0–2 were completed, and preliminary designs were developed to maximise light and space. One highlight was the inclusion of a roof lantern over the bedroom, which allowed natural light to flood the space and created a warm, inviting environment. This design choice also ensured that the new living area felt open and well-ventilated.
The project team is now consulting with the council to confirm permitted development rights. If approved, the following steps involve producing detailed technical drawings for building control, including one-to-50 sections, and ensuring compliance with local planning regulations. Given the project’s simplicity, the client plans to work directly with builders for construction, minimising overhead costs.
This conversion project showcases how thoughtful design can repurpose an underutilised space, enhancing the property’s usability while maintaining its architectural coherence.
